WINNIPEG, Canada, June 6, 2008.- Canada will be
playing in the gold medal match following their
victory over Mexico. After a scary first set, the
Canucks did not dissapoint their fans and won the
next three sets. Set scores were: 18-25, 25-22,
25-12, 25-18.
Canada kept doing mistakes in the first set and
seemed unable to pass the Mexican serve. But a few
good blocks in the second set gave the momentous
back to the Canadians and they did not loose it
until the end of the match, blocking everything
coming their way. Team Mexico showed great defense
but could not follow the enchanted Canadians. With
a lead of 16-6 in the third set and of 14-7 in the
fourth set, team Canada showed they really wanted
a shot at the gold medal.
The Canadian leader was Gavin Schmitt with 13
attacks, 4 blocks and 1 ace for a total of 18
points. He is followed by Nicholas Cundy, who
earned 14 points for Canada. On the Mexican side,
Irving Bricio got 15 points.
“We went throught difficult stages and the
Mexicans did not make a lot of mistakes. We were
not totally prepared for that but with some
changes on the court, we managed to do very well
in the other sets” declared Canadian coach Glenn
Hoag
Mexican coach Jorge Azair congratulated Team
Canada: “Canada is a very strong team and played
well tonight. We had very good first and second
sets but could not keep up the pace. We are a
young inexperience team but are learning a lot.
Playing against good team like Canada gives us
maturity.”
Canada will be playing tomorrow against USA, for
the Gold medal of the 2008 Men’s Pan American Cup.
